Fall is upon us, and so is a new header…

Yup, it’s Fall! More exciting posts to come soon including some character designs for “Hockey, Love, & GUTS!” and the occasional painting here and there. But for now, you can enjoy the new header above (and below, hehe.)

Some of my “9″ Storyboards

Since the film is out, I think I can put these here. So please enjoy this update to my portfolio page by clicking on the image below.

PS: (Of course, if anyone has a problem with having these here, just let me know and I’ll take them down.)

Animation Reel

Here’s my animation reel. Clocking at just a little over a minute, I think it sums up pretty well what I’ve been up to. The clips include work from my short films “The Fox and The Baby” and “Her Lion’s Jump” as well as from freelance work I did for UCLA using the Joe Bruin character that I redesigned just for the spot. Also, there a couple of clips from a commercial for Dodge that I worked on at Stardust Studios – I animated some background characters and assets and assisted lead animator Robin Steele with some inbetweens for the hand drawn animated cars. The song “Now and Then” is by Marcel Camargo and can be downloaded in its entirety here:

Enjoy,

PS: I’ll probably have a better version of the reel available somewhere soon… maybe in as a link url to a quicktime movie… maybe in mpeg 4… that’s maybe less than 60mb so you can download it all you want… maybe…

UPDATE 05/19/2009: The car commercial shots on my reel come from this spot here:

http://motionographer.com/theater/dodge-shared-passion/

The team at Stardust Studios on this commercial were lead animator Robin Steele, effects animator Dylan Spears, background characters and lead assistant Régis Camargo (yours truly), scanner and checker Wayne Chang, with compositing by Thomas Horne, CG car animation by John Cherniack, art direction by Jonathan Wu, produced by Steiner Kierce and directed by Brad Tucker. I’m sure I missed someone, but those were the people I worked with. (Though Aaron Clark did some storyboards on it as well, even though I didn’t work with him on this project.)

For all the other works on this reel, check out my YouTube channel and the links section on the sidebar under “My Films.”

More with Richie Kohan

Here are some more sketches that I’ve done based on Richie’s ideas. It helps keep my color chops in check while learning more, of course. Well, if I can just start doing more environments with a different color scheme, then I’ll feel that I’m moving forward. Either way, it’s fun.

PS: Previews for Chapter 2 of Hockey, Love, & GUTS! will be coming next. And as I’ve mentioned before I think that’s how I’m gonna post it from now on (previews for a while, and then just the whole chapter). Not only do I think this is better for everyone, but I can prove with my blog stats hiking over 100% when I posted chapter 1 last week, so thank you so much for visiting and reading my comic. It makes all the difference.

Intermission – Collaboration with Richie Kohan

I don’t know how much I’m allowed to talk about this, but Richie said I could post them so here they are. I’ll say this though, his epic project has a lot of potential, and doing concept work for something so new is always exciting. By the way, sorry for the long delay between posts – life seems even busier when you’re unemployed sometimes. Anyway, chapter 1 of “Hockey, Love, & Guts” is still in progress, so expect more pages very soon. But, in the meantime enjoy this intermission.

PS: oh and to all whom I met at Wondercon thanks so much for visiting my blogs and sites. I’ll probably talk more about the con in upcoming posts.

Joe Bruin in: Plunging Budgets

Some freelance work I did for UCLA. Many thanks go to Genevieve Haines of University Communications at UCLA for letting me do whatever I wanted with the mascot. I had fun, and it was especially rewarding getting back to Flash.

jbpb_title_final_002

You can watch the short on Youtube, though the SD version makes a bit hard to read the text and the HD version seems to skip a lot of frames for me. The flash version (without sound) is posted on here http://my.ucla.edu/ (reload and it will probably show up if it doesn’t the first time.)

Enjoy!

PS: if you watch the HD version embedded here, then it plays fine… go figure.

For Dan

fordanmclaughlin_001

Get well soon Dan, we miss you.

Peace.

Be

I write this because this time, this year, writing my resolutions means something different to me.

Because I think this will be good for me.

To be a better person.

Be happier with my life.

Be closer to my friends and family.

Be calm.

Be hopeful.

Be inspired.

Be assertive.

Be compassionate.

Be employed.

Be rich.

Be satisfied.

Be realistic.

Be rational.

Be energetic.

Be new…

Actually scratch all that,

and just,

Be.

The Fox and The Baby on YouTube… Finally!

This is technically my second year film at UCLA Animation, but I really consider it my first film. My actual first film was much more an experiment than a full film, so “The Fox and The Baby” really feels to me like a first film, with all it’s mistakes and successes. I finished it in 2004 and it took me about 11 months (from August of 2003 to June of 2004) from a complete blank page to a finished film. So, yeah, there it is. Enjoy!

Head Drops

There are far too many things to talk about, and I’m still unsure as to whether to put them in such a public manner as this blog. So, this sketch is a summary of how I’ve been feeling lately. Interpret it as you may, that way I won’t get in trouble and embarass myself. Well, maybe I’ll edit this post if I feel like explaining myself…

About the name

"Reggaenights" was a nickname bestowed upon me by my older brother Marcel, sometime in the late 1980's, when the song "Reggae Night" by Jimmy Cliff was still popular... well, at least in Brazil it was. For unknown reasons my nickname got stuck in the plural, but variants such as "Reggae" or just "Nights" came about within my family (even my Mom calls me Nights sometimes.) Ironically, I don't listen to reggae music all that much, but I still enjoy it. Régis, Reggae, or Nights work for me just fine. No "Reejus"... please. :)
